Voter turnout in the Nov. 5 general election in Kentucky surged past the prediction by the secretary of state. Alison Lundergan Grimes predicted a 31 percent voter turnout for the election for governor and other statewide offices, but voters easily beat that prediction, with 42 percent casting ballots.

Warren County Clerk Lynnette Yates said both political parties had so much at stake in the governor’s race that it ignited an unusual amount of voter interest.

The measles outbreak continues across the country with Ohio becoming the latest state with a confirmed case of the disease.

Ohio State Epidemiologist Sietske de Fijter said Friday that a new case has been confirmed in Stark County. People who are unvaccinated are at risk, she says.

Measles is extremely contagious said de Fijter. “Over 90 percent of individuals who are unprotected are unvaccinated, and who get exposed to the measles virus will come down with the disease.”

She said vaccination is the best form of prevention.

Kentucky's chief election official is projecting about 12.5 percent of the state's registered voters will turn out for next week's primary election.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes said Thursday it appears turnout next Tuesday will be consistent with past primary elections, based partly on current absentee voting patterns.

Grimes says it's "not OK" for such a small portion of Kentuckians to vote and says she hopes more Kentuckians go to the polls to prove her prediction wrong.

With about a month to go before Kentucky’s primary elections, all three major Democratic candidates for governor appeared together on stage for the first time on Thursday.

During a forum held by Louisville’s Rotary Club, candidates differed only slightly in their stances on a wide range of issues including preserving Kentucky’s Medicaid expansion, shoring up public education and allowing casino gambling to generate revenue for the state’s ailing pension systems.

But the candidates are still trying to set themselves apart.

Republicans in the Kentucky House of Representatives have selected a new set of leaders for the upcoming legislative session and nominated a new speaker for the first time since Rep. Jeff Hoover stepped down from the position early this year amid a sexual harassment scandal.
