The Kentucky Public Service Commission is formally investigating water loss at utilities. It partly stems from ongoing issues in an eastern Kentucky water district.
The PSC case centers on operations and finances of utilities that are unable to account for 35 percent or more of the water they produce or purchase. The order directs ten water utilities to provide extensive information regarding operational practices and efforts to reduce water loss.
The regulatory entity has, in recent rate orders, directed utilities with excessive water loss to take steps to remedy the problems. Two utilities, Martin County Water District and Cannonsburg Water District are the subjects of current PSC proceedings which include investigations of their excessive water loss.
