A new trail is opening up this week across Kentucky, but it has little to do with hiking, biking, or driving. It’s the initiation of the Kentucky State Park Culinary Trail, right in line with the state parks’ administration focus on food.
There will be feature meals at all nine state park dining rooms. State Parks’ Director of Food Service Tom Brown runs down the menu at Blue Lick in Northern Kentucky. “They will feature an appetizer of a tomato pie which is prevalent to the area. A northern Kentucky, Cincinnati favorite is Goetta. They will be featuring Goetta and also potato cakes and then dessert will be a transparent pie,” said Brown.
Brown says Kentucky state parks already see a number of out of state visitors, but this culinary trail may serve to attract even more travelers.
Meals unique to various regions of the Commonwealth will be served in state park dining rooms. Brown, says the initiative carries a ‘farm to table’ emphasis. “The catfish will be local Kentucky Lake catfish. The breadings will be from Bloomfield Kentucky. Our corn meals will be from Weisenberger Mills in Midway Kentucky. The jam that we use for the jamcake at Jenny Wiley will be from Yoder’s at Somerset,” said Brown.
Tom Brown says guests can pick up a passport to have stamped at each park. He says a gift will be offered to those who make stops at all nine. The culinary trail program runs through October.
