Lexington’s new mayor and council members are now officially sworn into office and ready to tackle urban county government business. The inauguration for Linda Gorton and council took place Sunday afternoon at the University of Kentucky.
Fayette Circuit Judge Ernesto Scorsone administered the oath of office for the former longtime council member now turned mayor.
The ceremony complete with pageantry and song was held in UK’s new student center. Gorton, the eighth mayor in Lexington’s merged government, said it sends a message that the city and UK are walking hand in hand. While the city is in the midst of fiber optic wiring and economic growth seen in high profile construction projects, Gorton said city budgets will be tight for the next few years. “Even though there will be many hurdles to clear, I firmly believe our future holds great promise. Our city’s big dreams are fueled by economic growth,” said Gorton.
The retired nurse said partnerships are found in the city-college relationship, and a mayor and council working together.
