And we turn now to NPR's Robert Smith. He has been outside the home of Adam Lanza's mother on the outskirts of Newtown, Connecticut. And, Robert, has the home also been a crime scene today?

ROBERT SMITH, BYLINE: Yes. Police are treating this as a crime scene. And I should make this very clear: Police have cordoned off the entire street where this house is, and it's a very rural and affluent neighborhood (unintelligible). And it's impossible to get within, I don't know, maybe even an eighth of a mile of this home. And there's a lot of police here.

The most populous city in the country is drying out, and beginning a long and complicated recovery. One positive sign: Tomorrow, some New York City subway routes are scheduled to reopen. But today, gridlock ruled as people took to their cars. And that means it's carpool time.

ROBERT SIEGEL, host: The Republicans who would like to unseat President Obama used this Labor Day to talk conservative fundamentals in South Carolina. Tea Party favorite Senator Jim DeMint hosted five of the GOP candidates for president at a forum in Columbia, but the new frontrunner in the crowded Republican field didn't make the event. NPR's Debbie Elliott has been following the forum today, and she joins us now. Debbie, this could have been our first chance to see the two top candidates in the polls side by side. Mitt Romney was there.

A Tradition Shattered: Israelis Play Wagner At Bayreuth

Like all of Richard Wagner's music, performances of his piece Siegfried Idyll, is unofficially — but effectively — banned in Israel.

It's not just that Wagner was an anti-Semite. He wrote a notorious essay called "Jewishness in Music." And after his death, Wagner's family was close to Adolph Hitler. Hitler often the attended the annual Bayreuth Festival, which is devoted to Wagner's music.

Beyond all that, Wagner's music was the soundtrack to the Holocaust; it was played at Nazi death camps.
