Kentucky High School Named Best in the Nation

The nation's top public high school is in Kentucky, according to rankings released Sunday by Newsweek magazine. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science, a residential high school on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, topped Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools. The school, which opened in 2007 and is funded by the state, ranked fifth in Newsweek's 2011 list.

Kmart and Sears Announce Closings

The Kmart stores in Winchester and Hazard and a Sears hard-lines store in Middlesboro are among those that will be closed, according to a list released Thursday by the struggling Sears Holdings Co., which controls the two retail chains. The announcement includes 79 of the planned 100 to 120 stores that will be shuttered on the heels of a disappointing holiday season. The list, which is not complete, identifies 38 Kmart and 41 Sears stores. In addition to the Winchester store, Kmart operates Central Kentucky stores on Nicholasville Road in Lexington and in Georgetown, Versailles and Frankfort. Sears has a store in Fayette Mall in Lexington. Those stores were not on Thursday's list of closings.

Trader Joe's Comes to Kentucky

Gourmet grocery chain Trader Joe's will open its first Kentucky store Friday in Louisville. The store at 4600 Shelbyville Road will be open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, according to the chain's Web site. The company also plans to open a store in Lexington some time next year at 2326 Nicholasville Road, the former site of Joe's Crab Shack. Some work, including clearing a tree and removing items from inside the former restaurant, has begun on the property.

Most people have at least a notion of the things they want to see, do and experience before they die, aka their "bucket list": Climb a mountain, fall in love, see the Grand Canyon. But how should that list be tailored to Kentuckians? The Weekender/LexGo Central, has come up with "Kentucky's Bucket List," inspired by Parade magazine's recent cover story on "America's Bucket List." What are the things every Kentuckian should do, see or experience while living in our beautiful, often misunderstood state? What are the cultural touchstones that make Kentucky what it is and that would be a shame not to experience? What things go deep into the Kentucky experience? And how many of them can you accomplish this summer, which officially starts Tuesday?
