Tickets in one hand, wands in the other - both at the ready. Roughly 1,500 fans attended the midnight screening of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2,” the last in the movie series, at the Great Escape Theaters’ Bowling Green 12 today. The theater showed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1” at 9 p.m., followed by the sold-out midnight showing of “Part 2” on every screen in the theater.

Kentucky residents could feel the effects locally if Washington, D.C., politicians can’t come up with a solution to raise the debt ceiling by the beginning of August - although one state economist doubts the severity of the situation would be as bad as some have predicted. John Garen, the Gatton Endowed Professor of Economics at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, said there have been temporary disruptions of government business in the past. In those events, which are typically very brief, some federal employees are furloughed and offices are closed, he said.

State Corn Growers may Lose Subsidies

Members of Kentucky’s agricultural sector are keeping a close eye on the progression of a Senate bill on Capitol Hill. Last week, the Senate voted 73-27 in favor of an amendment to the Economic Development Revitalization Act of 2011 that would eliminate ethanol subsidies and protective tariffs. Should the economic development act become law - which many political analysts say is highly unlikely - the amendment would go into effect immediately and could mean trouble for Kentucky corn growers.

Karst (Caves/Sinkholes) Experts Confer

Western Kentucky University is hosting an international conference dedicated to the study of a familiar local landscape. Southcentral Kentucky, home to plentiful caves and sinkholes, is a part of a karst landscape, making it an appropriate spot for this conference. Karst landscapes - landscapes created by water in a carbonate rock setting, such as limestone or gypsum - include features such as sinkholes, springs and caves. Eighty conference participants represent 16 nations.

Bowling Green Startled by Terror Arrests

It looks like any other apartment - a bird’s nest on top of the door, a phone book on the porch and a grill by the back door. But early in the afternoon on May 25, Capri Johnson, 29, realized something big was going on in that apartment. Johnson and her 8-year-old son saw several large sport utility vehicles and a large pickup truck carrying law enforcement officials pull up outside her apartment building. As Johnson began to watch, she and other neighbors were told by law enforcement officials to go back inside their apartments. Now, Johnson knows that a man who was the subject of the raid was an Iraqi refugee arrested on suspected ties to terrorism.
