Middle School Class Uses Social Networking

Ella Bowling's seventh grade science class has something to tweet about. It's their use of the popular social networking site, Twitter, in the classroom. Bowling, who teaches at Mason County Middle School, said she had heard about colleges and even the Kentucky Department of Education using Twitter in order to share information. Most of Bowling's students have cell phones and use Twitter or other sites regularly. "I know in the past we have been so afraid of using social media and have discouraged it," Bowling said in an email sent to MCMS coworkers. "But, it's like they always say, if you can't beat them, join them! Students are going to use social media so why not find a way to get them to use it for an educational purpose!"

Leader of Addiction Recovery Group Arrested

The director of Never Alone, Never Again, a Maysville-based recovery resource for drug addicts was arrested Saturday on a charge of theft by unlawful taking over $1,000. Curtis Oliver, 53, allegedly took grant funding awarded to NANA by the Buffalo Trace Agency for Substance Abuse Policy Board. Maysville Police Detective Ken Fuller confirmed Oliver's arrest Saturday afternoon. Fuller said the investigation was prompted by board members of NANA who contacted him with reports of theft. An examination of bank statements for NANA showed Oliver had withdrawn money from the bank account via ATM card, Fuller said. "It appeared that he was using it for gambling habits," Fuller said.

Lewis County Explores Adventure Tourism

With hunting and fishing opportunities, hills perfect for trail development for ATV's, horses, biking and hiking, Lewis County has the adventure -- now it needs the tourism. Tuesday evening, approximately 50 people attended the first ever Lewis County Tourism Summit. The purpose of the summit was to discuss opportunities in adventure tourism.

Sometime before Louivy Bare was to turn 81, his daughter, Karen Wolfe, asked him what was one thing he had always wanted to do in life that he had never gotten to do. His answer was twofold: he wanted to ride in a hot air balloon, and he wanted to visit Alaska. While Bare said he believes his chance to get to Alaska may never come, he will be able to experience a balloon ride at this year's Buffalo Trace Balloon Race.

Animal Entrails Near Israeli Flag

Next to the American flag at the Valero gas station in May's Lick is a shorter pole bearing a white flag with a blue emblem: the Israeli flag. One of the owners of the gas station, Mark Myers decided to erect the flag to express his opinion on the current status of Israel, what it means to America and what America should mean for the country.
Friday morning, two days after the flag was hung, a small pile of animal entrails appeared to have been placed in the grass near the flag. Myers now wonders whether someone could have been protesting his decision to display the Israeli flag.

Kentucky Connection to Joplin Tornado

A Kentuckian who now lives in Joplin, Mo. survived Sunday's massive tornado along with his family. Eric Polley said the roof was ripped from his house; meanwhile, his neighbors began running around, checking on people, assessing the damage. "It was crazy," he said. "It was worse than anything I've ever seen in a movie ... I don't ever want to go through it again, that's for sure."
